With the script by an Oscar winner and a cast made up of four English actors, Pablo Trapero will focus on the family in his first film in English.
Pablo Trapero, Argentine Director.
Pablo Trapero is a central figure of contemporary Argentine cinema, whose work has left an indelible mark on the international film industry. With his unique focus on social issues and his ability to portray the harsh reality of life in Argentina, he has made his films resonate both nationally and internationally, even winning the Silver Lion for best direction at the International Film Festival of Venice.
One of the greatest exponents of the new Argentine cinema, the Argentine born in La Matanza will now take the leap that Damian Szifrón took in 2023 and will embark on the challenge of directing his first film in English. With a cast made up of renowned stars, his new film will also have a script written by Oscar winner Sarah Polley.
Pablo Trapero won the Silver Lion for best director for his work on “El Clan.”
& Sons is the name of the next installment of Trapero. The story will focus on Andrew, a prestigious novelist who, after waking up one day with the certainty of his imminent death, decides to try to mend his relationship with his children. Known in the literary field as A.N. Dyer, Andrew rose to fame at age 27, selling 45 million copies of his first novel. The plot addresses the complexities of family relationships and Andrew’s efforts to reconcile with his adult children, Richard and Jamie, after an event that estranged the family twenty years ago.
The news was confirmed by the entertainment industry news outlet Deadline, where the names that will play this complicated family dynamic were also revealed. & Sons will be headed by Bill Nighy, nominated for an Oscar for Live and recognized for others such as Love Actually or Pirates of the Caribbean; Noah Jupe, Indie Spirit nominee for A Quiet Place I and II; George MacKay, BAFTA nominee for 1917; and Matt Smith, BAFTA nominee for The Crown, now starring in the HBO hit House of the Dragon.
Cast &Sons.
But these are not the only big names that will accompany Trapero. The director will be paired with Sarah Polley, winner of the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay in 2023 for They Speak. & Sons is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by David Gilbert.
& Sons is a joint production of Infinity Hill, led by Axel Kuschevatzky, Phin Glynn and Cindy Teperman, and Matanza Cine, directed by Pablo Trapero.
Bankside Films will handle global sales on the project, while UTA Independent Film Group and CAA Media Finance will co-represent North American rights. It will be presented at the Cannes film market this week.
“What attracted me most was the universality of a ‘normal’ family dynamic as the core of the narrative,” explained Pablo Trapero for Deadline. “Our most intimate relationships are often the most complicated. & Sons tells the story of a group of flawed people trying to find peace with each other, even as they struggle to do so.”
“The unexpected surreal twist complicates matters even more. The sensational cast, who I am thrilled to work with, is a dream come true. They are the perfect ensemble to address and elevate these characters in the most powerful way, honoring the equally powerful writing from Sarah.”
One of the most outstanding elements of this project is, precisely, her: Sarah Polley. The screenwriter has been widely praised for her talent for transforming complicated stories into deep and moving scripts. Collaborating with Trapero promises to result in a film that will not only capture the attention of the public, but will also leave a deep emotional mark on those who see it.
